Susan Campbell stiffens in the chair and looks up from the book lying in her lap to the man who wants her to read it.

“What do you know about Leviathan?”

“More than you. Phillipa Audrey’s death is all that stands between them and the end of everything. Stop her dying on time, the future dies and they win. It’ll all have been for nothing. Is that what you want?”.

She looks at him with disdain. “Stop being so over-dramatic. Leviathan were scattered, broken. I know, I was there. All their plans for the Ministry came to nothing.”

“They have a new plan, and a new leader. And she hasn’t forgotten what you did to almost bring them down.”

“They were brought down.”

He shakes his head, frustrated at her inability to accept she’s wrong. “Leviathan are like a hydra. You cut off one head, another two take its place. They exist all through time and in more iterations than you know. Yes, you and Darleth took them down, but you didn’t finish them off. Like Sauron. And now they’re back. And they’re looking for you. And the rest of your family. And mine. The longer you delay reading that book, the easier you make it for them to find both.”

Before she can respond the door opens, and Simms enters with the tea.

“Ah, Simms. Tell her why she needs to read the book.”

For a blind man, Simms proves to be surprisingly adept at both negotiating the furniture in the room and finding the table on which to put the tray with the tea.

“You have already read the beginning of the book, Mrs Campbell. As a result, you now know the future.”

Smith interjects. “Which in turn means the timelines are already beginning to adjust.”

Simms centres the tray on the table and stands up, taking a step back as he speaks.

“Every point in time has a certain number of inherent probabilities, depending on the number of possible bifurcations resulting from the potentialities of the possible outcomes.”

Susan Campbell thinks it’s a pity that Simms can’t see the look of confusion on her face. If he could, he might make another attempt at a more understandable explanation. Instead, she turns to Smith, who is sitting forward in his chair, reaching for the teapot.

“Could you translate that into English for the benefit of those of us who don’t speak fluent gobbledygook?”

Smith starts pouring the tea as he speaks.

“Because you’ve started reading the book, the variables are already diminishing, possibilities are winking out of existence as the potential future solidifies around one single outcome. The more you read, the more fixed that future becomes, and the less they’ll be able to alter it, attack it, and ultimately change it. But they’ll sense the changes as they happen. And eventually they’ll track those changes to their source.”

“To here?”

It’s Simms who answers her now.

“Yes. They will eventually work out that this is the convergence point.”

Smith continues. “Me from twenty years from now, you from seven years ago. Neither of us should be here. But it was the only thing I could think of to do.
